topic 2: Having your hair insured for $1 million seems like something a super model or actress would do, not the nastiest safety in the NFL. But if Troy Polamalu can do that, why shouldn't Tiger Woods protect his cell phone and Maria Sharapova her legs?

topic 3: Looks like a match made in athletic heaven for tennis star Maria Sharapova and her now-fiancĂ©, L.A. Lakers shooting guard Sasha Vujacic. Adding another celebrity bride to the list, Maria Sharapova has announced her engagement to Sasha Vujacic. The tennis-playing hottie received a wedding proposal from her LA Lakers beau on Tuesday at Vujacic’s Manhattan Beach, California house.

Maria and Sasha have been great for each other, both in the personal realm as well as in their athletic careers. Prior to that, the engagement was also confirmed by Sharapova’s agent, Max Eisenbud, who is probably gnashing his teeth at his big money-maker even contemplating settling down in a cushy courtside seat at Lakers games, playing the adoring spouse and forgetting all about her mega-million-dollar tennis career. Vujacic, 26, popped the question to Sharpova, 23, Tuesday night at his Manhattan Beach, Calif. The couple were first spotted last November cozying up at a U2 concert in L.A. They have been dating for nearly a year. Maria Sharapova Engaged

(Reuters) - Maria Sharapova shifted into a higher gear Wednesday as she overwhelmed unseeded Anastasiya Yakimova of Belarus with the loss of just two games to surge into the third round of the U.S. Open.

Sharapova, who battled through a tough three-setter against Briton Heather Watson in her opening match, was sharper with her groundstrokes and steadier with her serve in the 70-minute 6-1 6-1 rout.

The third-seeded Russian and 2006 champion hit 35 fewer unforced errors than in her wayward first round, while winning points on 14 of 16 forays to the net.

Next up for Sharapova will be 26th seed Flavia Pennetta of Italy, a straight-sets winner over compatriot Romina Oprandi.

"I think I improved my intensity a lot," Sharapova, 24, a three-time grand slam winner said. "I was moving a lot better, just hitting a lot freer.

"Overall I did many things much better than the previous round. I really had to. I didn't play my best tennis, but I gave myself a chance to play another match and improve. I did a good job with that."

As the closing match of the Day Three program, Sharapova did not take the court until after the first night contest, won by American Andy Roddick in three hours.

World number four Sharapova made quick work of her task but still did not finish until after midnight and looked sleepy when she finally faced reporters.

"I mean at 10:30 I'm under the covers; at 11:00 I'm out," she said about her usual off-court routine. "I don't think I'd watch anything at midnight.

"But when you're in the moment, when you start the match, I'm not thinking what time it is or I want to get off the court as soon as I can. When you're out there, it's just about doing whatever you can to win the match."

Sharapova forced out by unforced errors

NEW YORK:

Maria Sharapova’s US Open dream was shattered by Flavia Pennetta as she was stunned 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 in the third round of the US Open.

Sharapova, a former champion, admitted that her erratic display led to her downfall.

“I made way too many unforced errors,” said Sharapova. “I fought back to get myself back in the match in the third set. When you’re down 4-1 and you get yourself back in a position where you can win and then start making errors, it’s just too inconsistent to win.”

Pennetta took full advantage of the Russian’s 60 unforced errors and 12 double-faults, holding her own after Sharapova’s second-set fight-back led to a tense third set and claiming what she called one of the biggest wins of her career.

Murray ekes out a win

Meanwhile, Andy Murray appeared to be heading for a second-round departure after dropping the first two sets to Robin Haase before turning things around.

He did, however, have to fend off a last furious challenge in a fifth set he called ‘a bit of a blur’ to win 6-7, 2-6, 6-2, 6-0, 6-4.

“Even when Haase started coming back I wasn’t panicking, I wasn’t getting frustrated,” said Murray. “I just stayed focused and managed to turn it around. I just stayed tougher than him.”

The Briton, who lost the first two sets, took the lead in the third set, as the 24-year-old Haase faded.

Nadal registers comfortable win

Second-seed Rafael Nadal advanced with far less drama, moving on when France’s Nicolas Mahut called it quits with an abdominal strain while trailing 6-2, 6-2.

Nadal said he was sorry Mahut was hurt, but not sorry to be safely through.

“I prefer to be in the third round,” he said. “I spent a long time on court in the first round. It’s not nice to win like this, but that’s sport sometimes.”

Men’s 2009 champion Juan Martin del Potro registered a 6-2, 6-1, 7-5 victory over fellow Argentine Diego Junqueira.

Peng, Zvonareva through to 4th round

Meanwhile, Shuai Peng, the 13th seed, was the top-ranked player left in her quarter after a 6-4, 7-6 victory over German Julia Goerges. Second-seed Vera Zvonareva also made it safely into the last-16, surviving some shaky moments to get past Spain’s Anabel Medina Garrigues 6-4, 7-5 and next faces Germany’s Wimbledon semi-finalist Sabine Lisicki — a 6-0, 6-1 winner over Irina Falconi.
